Abstract：In this paper, an experiment of uniaxial compression of shale performed with some simple devices has been described. The experimental results show that there exists very close relation between the mechanical performance and structural plane direction. According to observation, theoretical analysis and experiments, proposed are new concepts of rock mechanics which play an important part in rock engineeringand theory of rock mechanics.
